Contractor License

by glen on November 7, 2009

So, you figured it was time to make the plunge and start working for yourself? Now the fun begins when you see the mountain of books it takes to pass and get your contractor license.

But cheers, because you are taking the correct steps to be a great contractor. See, most think that they can skirt the system for a while and work with out your contractor license.

Nobody wins with this type of attitude and this will get you off on the right foot. Yes, you have a lot to learn because not only will you need to test on your trade skills you will also learn how to run your business.

Yes, learning about workman’s compensation and taxes and also some bookkeeping skills will be part of your course.

By the time you have completed your schooling and taken some test runs about the test you will be ready and eager to get your test over with.

Sure, you will be nervous but just like when you were in high school and cramming for your final grades to graduate you will fine the inspiration to plow ahead and pass with flying colors.

There is no better feeling then passing your contractor license and hanging your license proudly on your office wall.

But now the fun begins and your out there in the real world and ready for some business. This is where I hope you have decided to pick a construction niche that you can specialize in and you will excel at.

Being all things to all people in today’s world is a quick way to going out of business. If you decide to sell and install replacement windows then be the best at selling and installing your windows.

I like to call it “Maven” status because this will set you apart from any other window contractor in your area. Yes, you earn this status with excellent client services and running a great contractor business.

So there you have it, go after your contractor license and protect it like it’s your own drivers license because you need it.

Now go study!
