How contractors deal with mistakes from salesmen!
WARNING this post may get out of hand, so do not shoot the messenger.
Let’s face it we all make mistakes at times, but when it comes to the salesmen mistakes I would say that most contractors are not to forgiven. Most believe that hey I hired a professional to sell and they should no there business. And of course the biggie is that I paid you for a job and it needs to be right.
On one side of the coin for the salesmen I see some things that can go wrong. Let me explain! I find that where I work most of the salesmen mistakes come from be rushed and not taking the time to look and measure everything properly. The other day a salesman sold a great job, or so he thought but after a closer look he did not consider the slope of the lot.
To do the work we had to do we would have added 32 yards of dirt plus the machine and the man power to do the job correctly. This does not take into the landscape challenges also plus those cost.
We think back how many times the salesmen have missed footer requirements. Or promise the client a door pad for there screen door. It’s always the little things that not only cost you money but then the time involved to make it right.
Sales people just do not understand when you need to do “charge backs” and they get all pissed off and go off on you. And here you are thinking as the owner I will give the guy a break and just split the mistake in half with them.
So to all the owners out there forget it because you will not win the battle so what the hell just charge them the whole price for there mistake. For me I am a forms type of guy. I have been there in years past and I learn from my mistakes. So I came up with a form for all of my type of jobs. Mainly it’s just a check sheet so I do not forget anything.
Now I know what your thinking, the salesmen believe that it’s not there job to come up with these forms. But I say if it makes you accountable for your job and this is how you make your living, then hey do what it takes to do things right.
Going that extra mile is what it takes in today’s contracting world. So step up to the plate if you are a salesman and take the time to make your own forms that work for you.
For the business owner out there do not be afraid of charge backs to your sales staff because this will separate the stars and the losers and you already no what to do with the losers.
Happy Selling

Hi! Everyone, Many Salesmen they intended to do mistakes for the sake of business, oh well let’s face our reality right now that many of businesses are affected with the global financial crisis but im not saying all of them. No one is perfect they say even the contractor take the consequences. Anyway in business you need to take a small oppurtunity or even bigger if you have a chance and they always do that unnoticed.
