How much do you spend on your marketing?
Yes, the picture does tell the story because you need a budget for marketing your business. My personal opinion is that if you are not marketing your contractor business then your business is dying a slow death.
My partner Josh is gearing up for his seamless gutter business after a long winter in New Hampshire and he is moving into uncharted territory because he is hiring his first sales person.
What do you think his biggest concern is? Will I have enough leads to keep his sales person busy?
My answer was yes, as long as you have a marketing plan! So we set out to put a marketing plan together that fits his budget. Then Josh has to do some homework and collect the data and the prices to be able to put a plan in place that is within Joshes budget but also to get the best bang for his dollar.
Remember this is a numbers type game you are playing with but also remember that your playing with your hard earned money. So making the plan work and pay off is important.
Now Josh has an upper hand named Glen because Glen has been down this road a few times so I won’t let Josh fall trap to the ridiculous pricing that you see from the marketing media.
You always have options and with the economy the way it is Josh is in the drivers seat you might say when it comes time to place his marketing plan and put into effect.
You might be surprised how Josh is going to market his business because the numbers tell the story.
Josh first started an adwords campaign for a local search that included his main keywords. On his first day he received 30 leads at a cost of $20.00. I just love the Internet.
Next Josh found out that he can do an insert ad into the paper to 9000 homes that he has targeted for a cost of $550.00. Again this is reasonable and within Joshes budget.
History tells Josh that his average sale is $2,400 and he closes about 58% of his leads. So Josh does not need to spend a lot in marketing to have a good return.
We have tested Joshes offer also and we no it will convert into sales for him. This is where the numbers come into play. So if Josh needs more leads then he knows how much it will cost him to run his inserts. Plus for every time he runs the inserts or adword campaign he knows how much business he can write.
Josh also wants to add some postcard radius mailers around his new jobs to increase more leads for his new sales person. Again when you add it all up Josh has a fantastic return for his marketing dollars spent.
Nothing is wasted here Josh knows his marketing campaign will work and oh Joshes company does under 1 million in sales. So no matter what size company you are you are able to plan a marketing budget that fits and works for you.
The main thing here is to do your homework first and let the numbers speak for themselves.
Give me your thought on how you get your leads?
Happy Selling
